Source Apportionment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments from Chalong Bay, Phuket, Thailand
نویسنده
چکیده
The potential sources of 16 PAHs in surface sediments from highly tourism activities of Chalong bay, Phuket province, Thailand were apportioned. Twenty-eight of sediment samples were collected by using van Veen grab Sampler from Chalong bay, Phuket. Quantitative analysis of the 16 PAHs which categorized according to the USEPA was analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). Moreover, the multi-technique such as diagnostic ratios and principle component analysis (PCA) were applied to apportion the potential source of PAHs in the study area. The results showed that total concentration of PAHs (ΣPAHs) of sediments in Chalong bay ranged from 0.391 to 138 ng/g dry weight, with an average of 56.2±49.2 ng/g dry weight. While, the Diagnostic ratios plot was used to identify the potential sources of PAHs that caused by the anthropogenic in the study area. It was found that 80% of PAHs in sediments have originated from pyrolytic sources whereas the rest is originated from petrogenic sources. The accumulation of PAHs in sediments at Chalong bay were influenced by various potential sources of PAHs such as petroleum spills, combustion of fossil fuels, automobile exhausts, wastewater discharge from the domestic community and street runoff. The multivariate statistical treatment implicated the same potential sources of PAHs that are agreed with PAHs Diagnostic ratios.

Distribution and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the surface sediments of Gorgan Bay, Caspian Sea.
The level and source of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in the surface sediments from the Gorgan Bay, Caspian Sea. The sum of 16 PAHs (ΣPAH16) concentrations varied from 107.87 to 516.18 ng g(-1)dry weight, with average value of 270.96 ± 150.47 ng g(-1)dry weight. Ecological risk assessment of PAHs, indicated that adverse biological effects caused by acenaphthene, n...
متن کاملBioavailability of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and their Potential Application in Eco-risk Assessment and Source Apportionment in Urban River Sediment.
Traditional risk assessment and source apportionment of sediments based on bulk polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can introduce biases due to unknown aging effects in various sediments. We used a mild solvent (hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin) to extract the bioavailable fraction of PAHs (a-PAHs) from sediment samples collected in Pearl River, southern China. We investigated the potential app...
متن کاملPolycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Offshore Surface Sediments of the Northern Persian Gulf, Bushehr Province
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are classified as an important category of semi-volatile and persistent organic pollutants. They cause environmental problems due to their toxicity and accumulation in sediments. In this research, offshore sediments of 19 stations in 8 transects of the Persian Gulf in Bushehr province were studied to assess the sources of PAHs. The extraction and clean up...
متن کاملSources and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments, Thailand
To assess the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and identifying the main source of the pollutants in coastal, canals, riverine and the upper Gulf of Thailand, surface sediments were collected from urban canals (n = 8), the Chao Phraya River (n = 11), estuarine (n = 9), coastal area (n = 14) and the upper Gulf of Thailand (n = 28) and analyzed for 3-7 rings of PAHs. Sources...
متن کاملSource apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments of the Huangpu River, Shanghai, China.
We applied cluster analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) with multivariate linear regression (MLR) to apportion sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments of the Huangpu River in Shanghai, China, based on the measured PAH concentrations of 32 samples collected at eight sites in four seasons in 2006. The results indicate that petrogenic and pyrogenic source...
